KEEPSAKE CARE

At Ash & Stone, each keepsake is handcrafted from sterling silver, argentium silver, bronze, copper, brass, solid 9K/14K gold (yellow, rose, and palladium white), or platinum. Some designs feature infused “stones”, where ashes or other inclusions are permanently fused within sterling silver.

These metals and infused elements are designed to last a lifetime, but like all fine jewellery, they require care and attention to preserve their beauty. Please follow the guidelines below to maintain your keepsake.

General Care

Daily Wear

  • Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, exercising, cleaning, or performing manual tasks.
  • Avoid contact with harsh chemicals such as chlorine, cleaning agents, perfumes, lotions, and cosmetics.

Storage

  • Store jewellery in a dry, soft-lined box or pouch, separate from other pieces to prevent scratching.
  • Keep jewellery away from prolonged exposure to humidity and direct sunlight.

Cleaning

  • Use a soft polishing cloth designed for jewellery to remove tarnish and restore shine.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or brushes that may scratch the surface.

Care by Material

Sterling Silver

  • Sterling silver naturally tarnishes due to exposure to air, skin oils, and moisture.
  • Regularly polish with a silver-specific cloth to restore brightness.
  • Store in an airtight container or anti-tarnish pouch when not being worn.
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals, perfumes, or cleaning products that accelerate tarnishing.

Bronze, Copper & Brass

  • Naturally develop a patina (darkening or colour change) over time. This is expected and not a defect.
  • If you prefer a polished finish, clean gently with a non-abrasive jewellery cloth.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture to slow patina development.

Gold (9K & 14K – Yellow, Rose, Palladium White)

  • Gold is resistant to tarnish but can still show scratches or marks from daily wear.
  • Rose gold contains copper, which may deepen in tone with age.
  • Palladium white gold is naturally more colour-stable than traditional nickel-based alloys but may still develop surface wear.
  • Clean gently with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive compounds.

Platinum

  • Extremely durable and resistant to tarnish.
  • May develop a “patina” over time - a soft matte finish that many people find desirable. This can be professionally polished back to a high shine if preferred.

Infused Stones (Sterling Silver, Bronze & Copper)

  • Infused “stones” (created by binding inclusions such as ashes into sterling silver, bronze or copper) require the same care as any jewellery made using these precious metals.
  • Avoid knocks, drops, or pressure on the infused surface.
  • Do not expose infused stones to bleach, chlorine, or chemical cleaners, which can discolour or damage the surface.
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid immersion in jewellery dips or ultrasonic cleaners.

Additional Guidance

Engravings & Fine Details
Use a soft cloth to gently clean without wearing down engraving work.

Gemstones (if included in your design)
Avoid sudden temperature changes or exposure to harsh chemicals. Wipe with a soft damp cloth only.

Professional Maintenance
We recommend professional cleaning and inspection every 12–18 months, particularly for rings worn daily.
